REST vs SOAP APIs – Which One Should You Choose?
DharunKumaar R
Technical Contributor & ArchitectREST and SOAP remain important technologies in enterprise integration.
Although REST is widely used in modern applications, SOAP continues to play an important role in many enterprise environments.
REST APIs
REST commonly uses HTTP methods such as:
- GET
- POST
- PUT
- PATCH
- DELETE
JSON is frequently used for REST API responses.
SOAP APIs
SOAP uses structured XML messages and formal service contracts.
It remains common in environments that depend on established enterprise standards and legacy systems.
REST vs SOAP
REST is often preferred when simplicity, lightweight communication, and broad developer adoption are priorities.
SOAP can be appropriate when existing enterprise standards, formal contracts, or established SOAP-based systems are important.
Can They Coexist?
Absolutely.
Many organizations operate both REST and SOAP services.
An API management layer can provide consistent security, routing, monitoring, and policy enforcement around both.
Conclusion
There is no universal winner between REST and SOAP.
The right approach depends on business requirements, existing architecture, security requirements, tooling, and consumer expectations.
